Résumé mistakes to avoid — Interview skills for students

One spelling mistake (“Experiance”) or a casual email ID (“cutiepie_2008”) can undo a good résumé. Vague lines (“Did many activities”) say nothing; a false claim (“First prize” for second place) destroys trust. Use one font and one date format, save as a PDF with your name in the file name, proofread slowly and ask a teacher to check.

Tip

True, checked, consistent — “every line true, every word checked, one style throughout”

  1. Spelling mistakes: Experiance → Experience, Skils → Skills, Acheivements → Achievements, Responsable → Responsible.
  2. Too casual: a nickname email ID, slang hobbies, “lol”. Too vague: “Did many activities”, “Good at many things”. Never write a false claim.
  3. Good habits: proofread, a teacher’s check, one font, the same date format, PDF with a sensible file name (Name_Resume.pdf).

Use it for: Before sending any résumé, application form or college CV.

Worked example: 🔍 What is wrong with this résumé line? “Skils: typing, Hindi, English” → a spelling mistake

  1. “Skils” is misspelt — the word is “Skills”.
  2. So the line has a spelling mistake.

Check: Try it: read your résumé (or a practice one) aloud slowly and circle every spelling, date-format and font problem ✓
