Strengths and weaknesses — Interview skills for students

Panels ask about strengths and weaknesses to see whether you know yourself. A good strength answer gives proof (“I am organised — I planned our class trip budget and we stayed within ₹200 per student”). A good weakness answer is real and shows a plan (“I used to get nervous speaking in class; I joined the debate club and it is getting easier”). “I have no weaknesses” and “I am too perfect” sound fake.

Tip

Honest and useful — “a real strength with proof, a real weakness with a plan”

  1. Strength: name it, then prove it with a short real example — prepare two or three.
  2. Weakness: a real one that is not the main skill of the role, plus what you are doing to improve it.
  3. Avoid: “I have no weaknesses”, “I work too hard / I am too perfect”, “I am good at everything”, or a weakness with no plan to change.

Use it for: Interviews of every kind, scholarship forms, college applications and self-review at school or work.

Worked example: 💪 Strengths and weaknesses: good or poor answer? “I have no weaknesses at all.” → a poor answer

  1. Everyone has something to improve, so the answer is not believable and shows no self-awareness.
  2. So it is a poor answer.

Check: Try it: write two strengths with one proof each and one weakness with the step you are taking — then say them aloud ✓
