Numbers to 1000 and place value — Maths worksheet

In 462 the 4 is in the hundreds place (400), the 6 is in the tens place (60) and the 2 is in the ones place (2). So 462 = 400 + 60 + 2 — this is its expanded form. The place of a digit tells its value.

The method

Place decides value — “a digit is worth more or less depending on its place: hundreds, tens or ones”

  1. Three-digit number: hundreds, tens, ones from the left.
  2. Value of a digit = digit × 100, × 10 or × 1 by its place.
  3. Expanded form: 462 = 400 + 60 + 2.
  4. 10 more or 100 more changes only the tens or the hundreds digit (unless it passes 9).

Use it for: Reading prices and page numbers, counting money in hundreds, and the numbers chapter of Class 2 maths.

Worked example: What is the value of the digit 6 in 462? → 60

  1. 6 is in the tens place.
  2. 6 tens = 60.

Check: 400 + 60 + 2 = 462 ✓
