Time: o’clock and half past — Maths worksheet

A clock has a short hour hand and a long minute hand. When the minute hand points at 12, it is something o’clock — the hour hand shows which hour. When the minute hand points at 6, it is half past; the hour hand is then halfway between two numbers, and we say the smaller one (after 12 comes 1).

The method

Read the minute hand first — “minute hand at 12 → o’clock; at 6 → half past”

  1. Minute hand at 12 → o’clock. Read the hour hand.
  2. Minute hand at 6 → half past the hour the hour hand has just passed.
  3. One hour later: move the hour on by 1 (after 12 comes 1).
  4. Days of the week and months of the year always come in the same order.

Use it for: School and bed times, TV timings, calendars, and the time chapter of Class 2 maths.

Worked example: The minute hand points at 6 and the hour hand is halfway between 4 and 5. What time is it? Half past 4

  1. Minute hand at 6 means half past.
  2. The hour hand has just passed 4.

Check: Half an hour later the minute hand reaches 12 and it is 5 o’clock ✓
