Integers: multiplying and dividing — Maths worksheet

To multiply or divide integers, first work with the sizes and then decide the sign. Two numbers with the same sign give a positive answer; different signs give a negative answer. With many numbers, count the minus signs: an even number of them makes the product positive, an odd number makes it negative.

The method

Same signs plus, different signs minus — “multiply or divide the sizes, then fix the sign”

  1. (+) × (+) = (+), (−) × (−) = (+), (+) × (−) = (−), (−) × (+) = (−). Division follows the same rules.
  2. Work out the sizes first: (−6) × 7 → 6 × 7 = 42, then the sign: −42.
  3. Many factors: an even number of minus signs → positive; odd → negative.
  4. Scores with minus marks: add the plus marks, take away the minus marks.

Use it for: Quiz scores with negative marking, temperature falling every hour, money lost each day, and the integers chapter of Class 7 maths.

Worked example: What is (−6) × (−7)? → 42

  1. Rule of signs: a negative times a negative is positive.
  2. 6 × 7 = 42.

Check: 42 ÷ (−7) = −6 ✓
