Counting arrays (word problems) — Tables & Multiplication Mastery

An array is things in neat rows — dots in a rangoli, chairs in a hall, plants in a garden. Equal rows mean multiply. Read carefully: sometimes a few are missing or extra.

How it works

Equal groups — “rows × how many in each row”

  1. Find the equal groups: how many groups, how many in each.
  2. Multiply the two numbers.
  3. Missing ones? Take them away. Extra ones? Add them.

Use it for: Story sums in school tests and real life: seats, boxes, weeks, prices.

Worked example: A garden has 8 rows with 15 plants in each row, but 4 plants are missing. How many plants are there? → 116

  1. Equal groups: 8 rows × 15 plants.
  2. 8 × 15 = 120.
  3. 4 are missing: 120 − 4 = 116.

Check: 8 × 15 = 8 × 10 + 8 × 5 = 80 + 40 = 120, and 120 − 4 = 116 ✓
