Counting 1 to 10 — Nursery and KG maths

Now the rows have up to 10 pictures, shown in groups of five so they are easy to count. Your child counts every picture, counts only the asked-for things in a mixed row, and finds the group that has a given number.

How to teach it

Count in a group of five — “count the first five, then keep going: 6, 7, 8 …”

  1. Count the first group of five: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
  2. Keep going on the next group: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
  3. The last number you say tells how many.

Use it for: Counting to 10 fast and correctly — fingers, steps, coins and toys.

Worked example: How many stars are there? ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐ → 7

  1. Count the first group of five, then go on: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
  2. The last number you say tells how many: 7 stars.

Check: Five and two more — 7 stars ✓
