How to teach it

Count along the line — “say the numbers in order and the gap tells you the missing one”

  1. Read the numbers in order, pointing at each one.
  2. When you reach the “?”, say the next number in the count.
  3. Check: the number after the gap should follow it.

Use it for: Writing numbers 1 to 20 in order, and number tables in LKG books.

Worked example: Fill in the missing number: 6, 7, ?, 9 → 8

  1. The numbers go up by 1 each time. Count along the line.
  2. So the missing number is 8.

Check: 6, 7, 8, 9 — in order ✓
