How to teach it

Count, then compare — “count both groups: a bigger number is more, a smaller number is fewer, the same number is equal”

  1. Count the first group and the second group.
  2. A bigger number means more; a smaller number means fewer.
  3. If both numbers are the same, the groups are equal.

Use it for: Fair sharing, matching one plate to one child, and getting ready for the >, < and = signs.

Worked example: Are there more cars, more fish, or the same number? 🚗🚗🚗 🐟🐟🐟 → the same

  1. Count the cars: 3. Count the fish: 3.
  2. Both groups have 3, so they are the same.

Check: 3 and 3 — equal ✓
