Patterns — Nursery and KG maths

A pattern is a set of pictures that repeats: red, blue, red, blue … or apple, apple, banana. Your child says the pattern aloud, finds the part that repeats, and picks what comes next or what is missing.

How to teach it

Find the part that repeats — “say the pattern aloud, find the part that repeats, and keep it going”

  1. Say the pattern aloud: red, blue, red, blue.
  2. Find the part that repeats: red, blue.
  3. Keep the pattern going to find the next or missing picture.

Use it for: Threading beads, clapping rhythms, and later number patterns and tables.

Worked example: What comes next? 🔴 🔵 🔴 🔵 🔴 ? → 🔵

  1. Say the pattern aloud. This part repeats: 🔴 🔵.
  2. Keep the pattern going: the next one is 🔵.

Check: red, blue, red, blue, red, blue ✓
