Ordinal numbers — Nursery and KG maths

Ordinal numbers tell the place in a line: first, second, third, fourth, fifth and last. Your child counts animals in a line from the left, finds who is third, says in which place an animal stands, and counts how many are before it.

How to teach it

Count places from the start — “start at the left and say first, second, third … for each place”

  1. Start at the left end of the line.
  2. Touch each animal and say: first, second, third, fourth, fifth.
  3. The last one in the line is “last”.

Use it for: Races and queues, steps in a recipe, and days in a week.

Worked example: Which animal is third in the line? Count from the left. 🐶 🐱 🐭 🐰 🐸 → mouse

  1. Start at the left and count: first, second, third, fourth, fifth.
  2. The third animal is the mouse.

Check: 🐶 first, 🐱 second, 🐭 third ✓
