The rule of thirds splits the frame with two lines across and two lines down into 9 boxes. Placing the subject on a line or where two lines cross (there are 4 crossing points) usually looks better than dead centre. In a frame 1920 pixels wide, the vertical lines are at 1920 ÷ 3 = 640 and 2 × 640 = 1280 pixels. For light, face a bright window or put a lamp behind the camera; a window behind the person turns them into a dark silhouette. Three-point lighting uses a key light (the main light), a fill light (softens shadows) and a back light (outlines the edges).
