The elements of art — Art and painting for kids

Every picture is built from seven elements of art. Line is the path of a moving point. Shape is a flat area, form is a solid 3D object, and colour is the hue we see. Texture is how a surface feels, space is the area around and between things, and value is how light or dark something is.

Artist's tip

Seven building blocks — “every picture is built from line, shape, form, colour, texture, space and value”

  1. Line = a moving dot’s path; shape = flat (2D); form = solid (3D).
  2. Colour = hue (red, blue …); texture = how it feels (rough, smooth, furry).
  3. Space = the area around and between things; value = light to dark, from white to black.

Use it for: Talking about any picture, art class vocabulary and planning your own drawing.

Worked example: 🧱 Which element of art is “how a surface feels”? → texture

  1. Rough, smooth, bumpy and furry are all about touch.
  2. How a surface feels is the element called texture.

Check: Tree bark looks rough — that is texture too ✓
