Paintings are grouped by what they show. A portrait shows a person, and a self-portrait shows the artist. A landscape shows hills, rivers and fields, a seascape shows the sea and a cityscape shows city buildings. A still life shows objects that do not move, like a bowl of fruit or flowers in a vase. Tall subjects fit portrait (tall) paper; wide ones fit landscape (wide) paper.
