Goal: Mate with king and rook: shrink the box, bring your king, mate on the edge. 5 puzzles · ★★★ = no mistakes.
The kings face each other with one square between them (the opposition). Your king covers the whole 7th row.
The kings face each other. Checkmate in one move.
The rook draws a fence (a “box”) the king cannot cross. Make the box smaller and use your king to face the black king — then the rook mates along the edge.
With king and rook you mate the king on the edge of the board. Box it in with the rook, walk your king towards it, and when the kings face each other (opposition), check along the edge. If the black king attacks your rook, move the rook far away along the same line.
Chapter 8 — Endgames and strategy: Mate with king and queen or king and rook, win king-and-pawn endings with the opposition and key squares, and start games with the three opening rules.
