Goal: Win king and pawn against king by taking the opposition. 5 puzzles · ★★★ = no mistakes.
Black to move. The kings face each other with one square between them — White has the opposition.
Only one move wins. Take the opposition!
Do not rush the pawn. Move your king so the two kings face each other with one square between them — and Black has to move away.
When two kings stand on the same line with one square between them, the side that does NOT have to move “has the opposition”. In king-and-pawn endings the opposition lets your king go forward in front of its pawn — the key to winning.
Chapter 8 — Endgames and strategy: Mate with king and queen or king and rook, win king-and-pawn endings with the opposition and key squares, and start games with the three opening rules.
