Rule 2: develop a knight or bishop towards the centre. Which move follows it: Nh3, Qh5 or Nf3?

Your move

💡 Need a hint?

Develop = move a knight or bishop off its starting square towards the middle (not to the edge). Castle once the squares between king and rook are empty.

What you learn here

Knights and bishops should leave the back row early, aiming at the centre — a knight on the edge controls only a few squares. Bringing the queen out early lets your opponent chase her and gain time. Castle soon: the king hides behind its pawns and the rook joins the game.

Chapter 8 — Endgames and strategy: Mate with king and queen or king and rook, win king-and-pawn endings with the opposition and key squares, and start games with the three opening rules.
