Fake links and look-alike websites — Cyber safety for kids

Fake websites copy the look and the name of real ones. To check a link, find its owner: ignore everything after a /, then read the name just before the ending — in this course every address ends in .example, a practice ending that is never a real site. If Kite Bank’s real site is kitebank.example, then www.kitebank.example and kitebank.example/help are real, but k1tebank.example (1 for i), kitebnak.example (swapped letters), kitebank-prize.example (extra word) and kitebank.win.example (owned by win.example) are fakes.

Find the owner — “drop what is after /, read the name just before the ending”

  1. Drop everything after a /. The owner is the name just before the ending.
  2. It must match letter by letter: watch for swapped, missing or doubled letters, look-alike digits (1 for i or l, 0 for o) and extra words.
  3. A padlock only means the connection is private, not that the site is real. Type addresses you know instead of clicking.

Use it for: Links in messages, emails, ads, search results and QR codes.

Worked example: 🔗 Kite Bank’s real website is kitebank.example. Is this link real or fake: kitebannk.example? → fake

  1. The owner is kitebannk.example, but the real site is kitebank.example.
  2. A letter is doubled, so the link is fake.

Check: Try it: with a parent, open your school’s or bank’s real website by typing the address, and read its owner name letter by letter ✓
