Accessibility basics — HTML and CSS for kids

An accessible page works for everyone, including people who are blind and use a screen reader, or who cannot see some colours. Give every picture alt text, use headings in order without skipping levels, write link text that says where it goes instead of “click here”, use text that is big enough, label every form box, and choose colours with strong contrast.

Code tip

Pages for everyone — “build so that people using screen readers or with weak eyesight can use it too”

  1. Headings go down one level at a time: h1 → h2 → h3 (they may jump back up).
  2. Alt text on images, clear link text, labels on form boxes, big enough text.
  3. Strong contrast (black on white, yellow on black) is easy to read; light grey on white is not.

Use it for: Checking your pages before sharing them and making school websites everyone can use.

Worked example: ♿ A part of the page is under a <h4> heading. Which tag should its sub-heading use? → <h5>

  1. A sub-heading goes down exactly one level.
  2. <h4> → <h5>.

Check: <h4> → <h6> would skip <h5> ✗; <h4> → <h5> ✓
