Group interviews and GD basics — Interview skills for students

In a group discussion (GD) or group interview, the panel watches how you work with others, not who is loudest. Start by defining the topic if nobody speaks, add points with facts or examples, agree and build (“Building on what Kabir said…”), disagree politely (“I see it a little differently, because…”), invite quiet members in and sum up at the end. Never shout, mock or go off-topic.

Tip

Add, don’t dominate — “add clear points, respect others and help the group move forward”

  1. Good: listening to all, bringing in quiet members, facts or examples, disagreeing politely, staying on the topic, short turns, summing up.
  2. Poor: shouting others down, speaking non-stop, staying silent the whole time, mocking, going off-topic, repeating one point, arguing personally.
  3. Useful lines: start (“May I begin?”), agree and add, disagree politely (“I respect that view, but…”), invite (“Would anyone like to add?”), sum up (“To sum up, we agree on…”).

Use it for: College admission GDs, group interviews for internships, class debates and team meetings.

Worked example: 🗣️ What is the speaker doing with this GD line? “I respect that view, but the numbers suggest otherwise.” → disagreeing politely

  1. The speaker respects the other view but gives a different one with a reason.
  2. So it is disagreeing politely.

Check: Try it: hold a 10-minute GD with family or friends on “Should homework be banned?” and use at least one line of each kind ✓
