Preparing for an interview — Interview skills for students

Most interview nerves come from not being ready. Read the college or employer’s website and prospectus, practise answers aloud (a mock interview with a parent or friend is ideal), note two questions to ask, and pack one neat folder: photo ID, marksheets, résumé copies, certificates and the call letter. Check the route a day before and sleep on time.

Tip

Know, practise, pack — “know the place, practise aloud, pack your documents”

  1. Research the place: its website, prospectus, courses or products, recent news. Know your own résumé well.
  2. Folder: photo ID (proves who you are), marksheets (prove your marks), project file or certificates (show your work), call letter or invitation email (confirms your slot), 2–3 résumé copies.
  3. Practise aloud in a mock interview, check the route a day or more before, and sleep on time.

Use it for: The week before any interview — admission, scholarship, internship or part-time job.

Worked example: 📁 What does this document do for you at an interview: the call letter? → confirms your slot

  1. The call letter is the invitation that names your date and time.
  2. So it confirms your slot.

Check: Try it: make your interview folder checklist and pack it — ID, marksheets, résumé copies, certificates, call letter ✓
