Types of interviews — Interview skills for students

Students usually face three kinds of interviews. An admission interview checks your interest in the subject and your fit with the course and the college. A scholarship interview checks real need, your plans for the money and your commitment to study. A first-job or internship interview checks whether you are reliable, free for the shifts and good with people. Every interview is a two-way conversation.

Tip

Know what they look for — “admission = fit, scholarship = need and commitment, job = reliability”

  1. Admission interview: “Why this college?”, “Why this course?”, “Which subjects did you enjoy?” — they look for interest and fit.
  2. Scholarship interview: “How will this help your studies?”, “Why do you need support?” — they look for need, plans and commitment.
  3. Job or internship interview: “When can you start?”, “Are you free for shifts?”, “How would you handle an angry customer?” — they look for reliability. In a panel, answer the asker and glance at all.

Use it for: Before college and school admission interviews, scholarship panels, internships and part-time job interviews.

Worked example: 🎓 Which interview would usually ask this? “How will this scholarship help your studies?” → a scholarship interview

  1. The question is about the scholarship money and your studies.
  2. So it is typical of a scholarship interview.

Check: Try it: write down the type of your next interview and three questions that panel is likely to ask ✓
