Phone manners — Interview skills for students

A phone call to a school office, a college or an employer is a mini-interview: they cannot see you, so your words and voice do all the work. Call during working hours from a quiet place, greet, say your name and why you are calling, ask your question, note the answer and thank them before you say goodbye.

Tip

Greet, name, reason — “say hello, your name and why you are calling — then listen”

  1. Order of a polite call: greet and say your name → say why you are calling → ask your question → note the answer → thank and say goodbye.
  2. Polite: a quiet place, a fair time (working hours), speaking clearly, repeating key details like dates.
  3. Rude: eating while talking, calling very late, not saying who you are, hanging up suddenly, chatting to others mid-call. Switch your phone off before an interview.

Use it for: Calling a school or college office, enquiring about admission, internships and part-time jobs, and confirming interview times.

Worked example: 📞 Polite or rude on the phone: not saying who you are? → a rude phone habit

  1. The other person has to guess who is calling and why.
  2. So it is a rude phone habit — always say your name first.

Check: Try it: say aloud the first two lines of a call to a college office: greeting, your name and why you are calling ✓
