Solving conflicts — Leadership skills for students

Two teammates want to present; two others want different posters. Conflicts are normal in teams — what matters is how you solve them. Step 1: calm down (nobody listens while angry). Step 2: listen to both sides fully. Step 3: find options together, such as combining the best parts. Step 4: agree on a plan both sides accept.

Leader's tip

Calm, listen, options, agree — “four steps that turn a fight into a plan”

  1. The four steps in order: calm down → listen to both sides → find options → agree on a plan.
  2. Helps: a calm voice, saying “I feel…”, listening without blame, finding a middle way, apologising sincerely.
  3. Makes it worse: shouting back, taking sides at once, name-calling, bringing up old fights, spreading gossip.

Use it for: Arguments in group projects, sports teams, clubs, house events and between friends.

Worked example: 🕊️ When solving a conflict, which comes first: find options or listen to both sides? → listen to both sides

  1. The steps go: calm down → listen to both sides → find options → agree.
  2. Listening to both sides is step 2 and finding options is step 3, so “listen to both sides” comes first.

Check: Try it: next time friends disagree, walk them through the four steps — calm, listen, options, agree ✓
