Motivating, giving credit and being fair — Leadership skills for students

Teams try harder for a leader who notices their effort. Praise effort, celebrate small wins and thank people by name: “Riya stayed late to finish the charts.” When the team wins, say “We did it together!” Be fair — the same rules and chances for everyone, including your best friend. Favourites and shouting at mistakes quickly kill a team’s spirit.

Leader's tip

Praise, thank, be fair — “notice effort, say who did it, one rule for all”

  1. Motivating: praising effort, sharing the goal, celebrating small wins, thanking each member, showing the progress, cheering after a loss.
  2. Demotivating: shouting at mistakes, taking all the praise, comparing members, ignoring hard work, having favourites.
  3. Fair: jobs rotate, everyone gets a turn, the same rule for friends too. Unfair: friends get the easy jobs, the captain always bats first.

Use it for: Sports teams, house events, clubs, group projects and any team after a win or a loss.

Worked example: 🔥 Motivating or demotivating: having favourites? → demotivating

  1. When a leader has favourites, the others feel their effort does not count.
  2. So it is a way to demotivate the team.

Check: Try it: this week, thank three people by name for something specific they did ✓
