Where does the decimal point go? — Maths trick for kids

Multiplying decimals is easier than it looks. Forget the points and multiply whole numbers. Then count how many digits come after the points in the question — the answer gets the same number of digits after its point. Rounding tells you if it makes sense.

The trick

Count the places — “digits after the point in the answer = digits after the points in the question”

  1. Forget the points and multiply the whole numbers.
  2. Count all the digits after the points in the question.
  3. Put the point that many places from the right, then check by rounding.

Use it for: Money in rupees and paise, lengths in metres, weights in kilograms, and decimal sums in Classes 5 to 7.

Worked example: 3.4 × 2.1 — where does the decimal point go? → 7.14

  1. Forget the points: 34 × 21 = 714.
  2. Digits after the points: 1 + 1 = 2.
  3. Put the point 2 places from the right: 7.14.

Check: 3.4 × 2.1 = 3.4 × 2 + 3.4 × 0.1 = 6.8 + 0.34 = 7.14 ✓
