Change from ₹100 and ₹500 — Mental Maths Mastery

Shopkeepers rarely subtract — they count up from the price to the note you gave. Jump to the next ten, then the next hundred, then up to the note.

How to do it in your head

Shopkeeper’s count — “count up from the price to the note”

  1. If there are two things, add the prices first.
  2. Count up from the cost: to the next ten, to the next hundred, then to the note.
  3. Add the jumps — that is your change.

Use it for: Shopping, checking the change you get back, and planning how much money you need.

Worked example: You buy a kite for ₹37 and pay with a ₹100 note. How much change do you get, in rupees? → 63

  1. 37 → 40 is 3.
  2. 40 → 100 is 60.
  3. 3 + 60 = 63.

Check: 37 + 63 = 100 ✓
