Add by bridging through 10 — Mental Maths Mastery

When the ones add up to more than 10, jump to the next ten first. Split the number you are adding into “what fills the ten” and “the rest”.

How to do it in your head

Bridge through 10 — “fill up to the next ten, then add the rest”

  1. How much does the first number need to reach the next ten?
  2. Split the second number into that much and the rest.
  3. Jump to the ten, then add the rest.

Use it for: Adding a 1-digit number to any number, adding up scores, and counting on.

Worked example: 47 + 8 = 55

  1. 47 needs 3 to make 50. Split 8 into 3 and 5.
  2. 47 + 3 = 50.
  3. 50 + 5 = 55.

Check: 47 + 8 = 40 + 15 = 55 ✓
