Mixed mental challenge — Mental Maths Mastery

The final challenge mixes every lesson. Before you work, look at the numbers: is there a 9 or 99? Are they close together? Can you double or halve? Choosing the right strategy is the real skill.

How to do it in your head

Look first — “spot the numbers, then pick the strategy”

  1. A 9, 19 or 99 → round and adjust.
  2. Two close numbers → count up (or near doubles when adding).
  3. × or ÷ by 4 or 8 → double or halve; other sums → split into tens and ones.

Use it for: Mental maths rounds, Olympiad practice, quizzes and everyday sums.

Worked example: 512 − 99 = 413

  1. 99 is 100 − 1.
  2. 512 − 100 = 412.
  3. Give 1 back: 412 + 1 = 413.

Check: 413 + 99 = 512 ✓

✏️ Practice

Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
