Now the tables come in any order, and some sums have a missing number like 7 × ? = 56. A missing number is a times-table fact read backwards.

How it works
Swap and use what you know — “7 × 8 is the same as 8 × 7 — pick the easier table”
Swap the numbers if that makes it easier: 3 × 9 = 9 × 3.
Use an anchor fact: × 5 (half of × 10) or × 10, then add or take away.
Missing number: go through the table until you reach the answer — 7 × ? = 56: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56 → 8.
Use it for: Speed practice for tests, division facts (56 ÷ 7 = 8), and Module 2.
Worked example: 7 × ? = 56 → 8
Which number times 7 makes 56?
7 × 10 = 70 is too big; 70 − 14 = 56 — that is 2 sevens fewer.
10 − 2 = 8.
Check: 7 × 8 = 56 ✓
