Table of 9 — Tables & Multiplication Mastery

The 9 table is full of patterns. 9 is one less than 10, so 9 × n is 10 × n take away n. And the digits of every answer up to 90 add up to 9.

How it works

Pattern — “every answer in the 9 table up to 9 × 10 has digits adding to 9”

  1. 9 × n = 10 × n − n.
  2. Up to 9 × 10: the tens digit is one less than n, and the two digits add up to 9 (9 × 7 → 6 and 3 → 63).
  3. Check: the digits of the answer add up to 9 (or 18).

Use it for: Any 9 in a sum — and checking: 6 + 3 = 9 shows 63 is in the 9 table.

Worked example: 9 × 7 = 63

  1. 9 × 10 = 90 — but we need 7 nines, not 10.
  2. 10 × 7 = 70.
  3. Take away one 7: 70 − 7 = 63.

Check: 9 × 7 = 9 × 5 + 9 × 2 = 45 + 18 = 63, and 6 + 3 = 9 ✓
