Round and adjust — Tables & Multiplication Mastery

Numbers like 9, 19, 49 and 99 are just below a round number. Multiply by the round number, then take away the little bit you added.

How it works

Round and adjust — “multiply by the round number, then take away the extra”

  1. Round up: 49 is 50 − 1, 98 is 100 − 2.
  2. Multiply by the round number.
  3. Take away the number times the bit you added.

Use it for: Prices like ₹49, ₹99 and ₹199 — and any number that ends in 9 or 8.

Worked example: 6 × 49 = 294

  1. 49 is 50 − 1, so 6 × 49 = 6 × 50 − 6 × 1.
  2. 6 × 50 = 300 and 6 × 1 = 6.
  3. Take away: 300 − 6 = 294.

Check: 6 × 49 = 6 × 40 + 6 × 9 = 240 + 54 = 294 ✓
