Big and small, full and empty — Nursery and KG maths

Children compare sizes long before they measure. Here your child thinks about real things they know — an elephant and a mouse, a bus and an ant — and picks the bigger or the smaller one, and then the biggest or smallest of three. They also learn full, half full and empty: a glass with milk up to the top is full, with milk up to the middle it is half full, and with no milk at all it is empty.

How to teach it

Think of the real thing — “picture real things side by side to see which is bigger, and think how much is inside to see full or empty”

  1. Think of the real thing, not the picture on the screen.
  2. Imagine them standing side by side.
  3. The one that takes more space is bigger; the other is smaller.
  4. Full means filled up to the top, half full means up to the middle, empty means nothing inside.

Use it for: Choosing a bigger bag, a smaller bowl, or a box that fits, filling a glass or a bucket at bath time — and learning the words big, bigger, biggest, full and empty.

Worked example: Which is bigger: 🐘 or 🐭? → elephant

  1. Think of the real elephant and the real mouse. Picture them side by side.
  2. The elephant is bigger than the mouse.

Check: An elephant is much bigger than a mouse ✓
