Circle, square and triangle — Nursery and KG maths

Three first shapes: the round circle, the square with four equal sides, and the triangle with three sides. Your child names shapes in any colour, finds things that look like them — a biscuit, a dice, a slice of pizza — and counts the circles, squares or triangles in a row.

How to teach it

Corners and sides — “a circle is round with no corners, a square has 4 equal sides, a triangle has 3 sides”

  1. A circle is round, with no corners.
  2. A square has 4 straight sides, all the same length, and 4 corners.
  3. A triangle has 3 straight sides and 3 corners.

Use it for: Spotting shapes at home — a round plate, a square tile, a triangle samosa — and drawing first pictures.

Worked example: What shape does the pizza slice look like? 🍕 → triangle

  1. A triangle has 3 straight sides and 3 corners.
  2. The pizza slice looks like a triangle.

Check: Three sides and three corners — a triangle ✓
