You need: a plastic glass full of water, a stiff postcard, a towel, and a sink or bucket to work over. What happens: holding the card, you turn the glass upside down and let go of the card — the card stays on and the water stays in. Why: the air around us presses on everything (air pressure). The air pushing up on the card is stronger than the water pressing down. The same push of air lifts juice up a straw when you sip.
