You need: a balloon, a long string, a drinking straw, sticky tape and two chairs. What happens: when you let go, the balloon zooms along the string. Why: the stretched balloon pushes air out of the back, and the air pushes the balloon forward — every push has an equal push the other way. Real rockets work the same way with hot gases. The balloon stops when the air runs out; a rough or uphill string makes it go less far.
