You need: a bar magnet, a tray and test objects such as an iron nail, a steel paper clip, a safety pin, a wooden pencil, a plastic ruler, an eraser and an aluminium can. What happens: the nail, clip and pin jump to the magnet; the pencil, ruler, eraser and can do not. Why: magnets pull iron and steel (magnetic materials). The pull is strongest at the two poles. North and south poles pull together; two north poles or two south poles push apart. A freely hanging magnet points north–south.

Iron sticks — “magnets pull iron and steel; like poles push apart, unlike poles pull together”
Use it for: Class 3–6 science lessons on magnets; a simple magnet experiment for kids at home.
Check: An aluminium can is not pulled — it has no iron in it ✓
