Percentages in seconds — Speed Calculation

You do not need a calculator for most percentages. 10% is the amount ÷ 10. From that one number you can build 5% (half), 20% (double) and 15% (10% + 5%). 50% is a half, 25% is a quarter, and 1% is ÷ 100.

The fast method

Build from 10% — “10% is ÷ 10; halve it for 5%, double it for 20%”

  1. 10%: divide by 10. 1%: divide by 100.
  2. 5% = half of 10%, 20% = double 10%, 15% = 10% + 5%.
  3. 50% = half, 25% = half of a half.

Use it for: Discounts and sale prices, marks in percent, tips and GST, and percentages in Class 7–10.

Worked example: 15% of 360 = 54

  1. 10% of 360 = 36.
  2. 5% is half of that: 18.
  3. 15% = 36 + 18 = 54.

Check: 360 × 15 ÷ 100 = 5400 ÷ 100 = 54 ✓
