Teen times teen — Speed Calculation

Two numbers between 11 and 19 can be multiplied in three quick steps. Add the ones digit of the second number to the first number, put a 0 after it, then add the two ones digits multiplied together.

The fast method

Add across, then the ones — “first number + ones of the second, make it tens, add ones × ones”

  1. Add the first number and the ones digit of the second: 17 + 4 = 21.
  2. Put a 0 after it: 210.
  3. Multiply the ones digits (7 × 4 = 28) and add: 210 + 28 = 238.

Use it for: Tables 11–19, areas of small rooms and plots, and olympiad speed rounds.

Worked example: 17 × 14 = 238

  1. 17 + 4 = 21, so 210.
  2. Ones digits: 7 × 4 = 28.
  3. Add: 210 + 28 = 238.

Check: 17 × 14 = 17 × 10 + 17 × 4 = 170 + 68 = 238 ✓
