Increase or decrease by a percent — Speed Calculation

To raise a price by 15% you could find 15% and add it on — two steps. Faster: the new price is 100% + 15% = 115% of the old one, so multiply by 1.15 in one go. A fall of 15% leaves 85%, so multiply by 0.85.

The fast method

One-step multiplier — “start from 100% and add or take away the change”

  1. Increase by p%: multiply by (100 + p)% — up 20% is × 1.2.
  2. Decrease by p%: multiply by (100 − p)% — down 25% is × 0.75.
  3. Easy way to multiply: × the whole number (115 or 75), then ÷ 100.

Use it for: Price rises and sale prices, salary hikes, population growth, and profit and loss in Class 8–10.

Worked example: 360 increased by 15% = 414

  1. 100% + 15% = 115%, so × 1.15.
  2. 360 × 115 = 41400.
  3. 41400 ÷ 100 = 414.

Check: 15% of 360 = 36 + 18 = 54, and 360 + 54 = 414 ✓
