2-digit × 2-digit multiplication — Vedic maths trick

The most useful Vedic method: multiply any two 2-digit numbers in one line by working in three columns — vertical, crosswise, vertical.

The trick

Urdhva Tiryagbhyam — “vertically and crosswise”

  1. Right column: multiply the units digits (vertical).
  2. Middle column: multiply crosswise and add (tens × units + units × tens).
  3. Left column: multiply the tens digits (vertical).
  4. Write the columns from the right, carrying when a column is 10 or more.

Use it for: Any 2-digit × 2-digit sum (and, with one more column, bigger numbers).

Worked example: 23 × 41 = 943

  1. Right: 3 × 1 = 3.
  2. Middle: 2 × 1 + 3 × 4 = 2 + 12 = 14 → write 4, carry 1.
  3. Left: 2 × 4 = 8, plus carry 1 = 9.
  4. Answer: 943.

Check: Digit sums: 23 → 5, 41 → 5, 5 × 5 = 25 → 7; 943 → 16 → 7 ✓
