4-digit multiplication — Vedic maths trick

The same pattern again with seven columns. Each column adds the products of digits whose places add up to that column.

The trick

Urdhva Tiryagbhyam — “vertically and crosswise”

  1. Write both numbers with 4 digits (a 0 in front of a 3-digit number).
  2. Seven columns from the left: 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, 1 cross products.
  3. Combine from the right with carries.

Use it for: Big multiplications in Olympiad and competitive-exam practice.

Worked example: 1203 × 2011 = 2419233

  1. Columns: 1×2 = 2; 1×0 + 2×2 = 4; 1×1 + 2×0 + 0×2 = 1; 1×1 + 2×1 + 0×0 + 3×2 = 9; 2×1 + 0×1 + 3×0 = 2; 0×1 + 3×1 = 3; 3×1 = 3.
  2. No carries.
  3. Answer: 2419233.

Check: 1203 × 2011 = 1203 × 2000 + 1203 × 11 = 2406000 + 13233 = 2419233 ✓
