3-digit × 3-digit multiplication — Vedic maths trick

Vertically and crosswise grows with the numbers: two 3-digit numbers need five columns — vertical, then crosswise pairs and a three-way cross in the middle.

The trick

Urdhva Tiryagbhyam — “vertically and crosswise”

  1. For abc × def, columns from the left: a×d; a×e + b×d; a×f + b×e + c×d; b×f + c×e; c×f.
  2. Combine from the right with carries.

Use it for: Any 3-digit × 3-digit sum; also 3-digit × 2-digit (write a 0 in front).

Worked example: 123 × 321 = 39483

  1. Columns: 1×3 = 3; 1×2 + 2×3 = 8; 1×1 + 2×2 + 3×3 = 14; 2×1 + 3×2 = 8; 3×1 = 3.
  2. From the right: 3; 8; 14 → write 4, carry 1; 8 + 1 = 9; 3.
  3. Answer: 39483.

Check: 123 × 321 = 123 × 300 + 123 × 21 = 36900 + 2583 = 39483 ✓
