Cubes of 2-digit numbers — Vedic maths trick

A cube is a number times itself three times. For a 2-digit number ab, Vedic maths writes four terms in a row and doubles the middle two.

The trick

Anurupyena — “proportionately”

  1. Top row: a³, a²b, ab², b³ (each term is the one before × b ÷ a).
  2. Under the two middle terms write double of them, and add: a³ | 3a²b | 3ab² | b³.
  3. Combine from the right with carries.

Use it for: Cubes of 11 to 99 (and checking cube-root answers from trick 10).

Worked example: 23³ = 12167

  1. Top row: 8, 12, 18, 27.
  2. Double the middle two and add: 8 | 36 | 54 | 27.
  3. From the right: 27 → 7 carry 2; 56 → 6 carry 5; 41 → 1 carry 4; 12.
  4. Answer: 12167.

Check: 23 × 23 = 529, 529 × 23 = 12167 ✓

✏️ Practice
