Squares near 100 and 1000 — Vedic maths trick

To square a number close to 100 or 1000, move it away from the base by the same amount again, then add the square of the difference.

The trick

Yavadunam — “whatever the deficiency”

Find how far the number is from 100 or 1000 (below or above).
Left part: go the same distance again (96 → 92, 104 → 108).
Right part: the difference squared, with 2 digits for 100 and 3 digits for 1000 (carry the extra).

Use it for: Squaring numbers from about 88 to 112 and 970 to 1030.

Worked example: 96² = 9216

96 is 4 below 100.
Left part: 96 − 4 = 92.
Right part: 4² = 16 (two digits).
Answer: 9216.

Check: 96² = (100 − 4)² = 10000 − 800 + 16 = 9216 ✓
