Factorising quadratics — Vedic maths trick

Factorising is multiplying brackets (trick 20) backwards. Look for two numbers that multiply to the last number and add to the middle one.

The trick

Anurupyena — “proportionately”

  1. x² + bx + c: two numbers that multiply to c and add up to b → (x + one)(x + other).
  2. ax² + bx + c: multiply a × c; find two numbers that multiply to that and add up to b; split the middle term with them.
  3. Group the four terms in pairs and take out the common bracket. Check by multiplying back.

Use it for: Quadratic expressions and equations in Class 9–10. Type the brackets in any order.

Worked example: 2x² + 7x + 3 = (2x + 1)(x + 3)

  1. 2 × 3 = 6: numbers that multiply to 6 and add to 7 → 6 and 1.
  2. Split the middle: 2x² + 6x + x + 3.
  3. Group: 2x(x + 3) + 1(x + 3).
  4. Answer: (2x + 1)(x + 3).

Check: (2x + 1)(x + 3) = 2x² + 6x + x + 3 = 2x² + 7x + 3 ✓
