Squares of numbers ending in 5 — Vedic maths trick

Every number ending in 5 squares the same way: the answer always ends in 25, and the front part is the number before the 5 times the next number.

The trick

Ekadhikena Purvena — “by one more than the one before”

  1. Take the part before the 5 — call it t.
  2. Multiply t by the next number: t × (t + 1).
  3. Write 25 after it.

Use it for: Squaring any whole number that ends in 5 (15, 45, 105, 195…).

Worked example: 85² = 7225

  1. The part before 5 is 8.
  2. 8 × 9 = 72.
  3. Write 25 after it: 7225.

Check: 85² = (80 + 5)² = 6400 + 800 + 25 = 7225 ✓
