The trick

Urdhva Tiryagbhyam (special case) — “vertically and crosswise”

1. Write the first and last digit of the number, leaving a gap.
2. Add the two digits and put the sum in the gap.
3. If the sum is 10 or more, write its last digit and carry 1 to the left.

Use it for: Any number times 11. For 3 digits abc: a | a+b | b+c | c, carrying from the right.

Worked example: 57 × 11 = 627
