Long division by a 2-digit number means guessing with big times tables. In straight division you divide by the first digit only; the second digit is a “flag” that you subtract as you go.

The trick
Dhvajanka — “on top of the flag”
Divisor 32: divide by 3; 2 is the flag. The last digit of the dividend is the remainder column.
Each step: bring the remainder to the next digit, subtract flag × the last quotient digit, then divide by 3.
If the next step would become negative, take one less in the quotient.
In the remainder column, subtract flag × the last quotient digit to get the remainder.
Use it for: Dividing by any 2-digit number; works best when the flag digit is small.
Worked example: 7458 ÷ 32 = 233 remainder 2
7 ÷ 3 = 2 rem 1.
Bring 1 to 4 → 14, take 2 × 2 = 4 → 10; 10 ÷ 3 = 3 rem 1.
Bring 1 to 5 → 15, take 2 × 3 = 6 → 9; 9 ÷ 3 = 3 rem 0.
Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
