Multiplying algebra brackets — Vedic maths trick

Vertically and crosswise (trick 4) works in algebra too: the x² term, the x term and the number come straight from the three columns.

The trick

Urdhva Tiryagbhyam — “vertically and crosswise”

  1. x² term: multiply the x terms (vertical).
  2. x term: multiply crosswise and add (watch the signs).
  3. Number: multiply the numbers (vertical).

Use it for: Expanding two brackets in Class 7–10 algebra (and checking factorisation). Type x² as x^2 if you like.

Worked example: (2x + 3)(x + 4) = 2x² + 11x + 12

  1. Vertical: 2x × x = 2x².
  2. Crosswise: 2 × 4 + 3 × 1 = 11 → 11x.
  3. Vertical: 3 × 4 = 12.
  4. Answer: 2x² + 11x + 12.

Check: Put x = 1: (5)(5) = 25 and 2 + 11 + 12 = 25 ✓
